The sociologist Zygmunt Bauman pointed out that all designs and commodities produced in modern times are created solely for consumption. However, the meaning of consumption often involves waste, further leading to “The Waste Society”. This applies not only to goods but also to human society. When the society establishes the rules, there will inevitably be individuals deemed as waste—like many youths who were born in the 1990s or even the 2000s. The title of exhibition “Gen 90” parodies the term “Gen Z”. By constructing a "waste land," the exhibition tries to reflect on how youths born in the 1990s, were mass-produced, molded by templates, failed to meet societal expectations, labeled as defective products and branded as so-called "waste youths".
